People vs. City Council: Exposing the Zenith Backroom Deal

People vs. City Council: Exposing the Zenith Backroom Deal

You’re probably familiar with Zenith at this point - in 2021 we thought Portlanders had won the battle against their deadly oil trains when the City denied them a crucial permit. But last year we were betrayed by Portland Commissioners Dan Ryan and Carmen Rubio when they went back and secretly worked with Zenith to get the permit approved. Text messages and emails between the offices of Commissioner Rubio and Commissioner Ryan confirm that these two councilors negotiated with Zenith officials in an invite-only meeting at Zenith’s terminal on July 29, 2022 to ensure the dirty energy company could continue its dangerous operations that threaten frontline communities and Portland at large.

This is unacceptable behavior from our elected officials whose job is to be accountable to us - the people of Portland - not a Texas based oil company. We have attempted to engage with our City Councilors through appropriate channels, but we are being ignored and disrespected. So we are going to the Portland City Council meeting on Wednesday, September 6th to confront the City Councilors responsible for this backdoor deal, and expose their reckless behavior to the Portland public and local media.

We need a big group to join us inside the City Council meeting and outside City Hall - will you join us in speaking truth to power on September 6th at 9am? RSVP here! We particularly want to hear from you if you live in the Blast Zone (that’s 250,000 Portland residents - find out if that’s you by clicking here). We refuse to stand by while Portland City Council continues to put the health and safety of Portlanders at risk. We hope you can join us.
