WHAT: July 4th, also known as Independence day, is an American holiday that celebrates the "freedom" of the United States. In reality, this commercialized holiday celebrates the brutal and violent colonization of Indigenous people and land across Turtle Island, the enslavement of Africans stolen from their homelands, and modern imperialism and white supremacy. Freedom cannot come at the cost of the freedom of others, especially on stolen land amongst stolen Peoples. None of us are free until we all are free!
Instead of lighting fireworks and celebrating colonization, let's gather on the water and discuss the history of our local waterways and what it means for non-Indigenous folk to be settlers on this land. Folks of all kayaking experience levels are welcome.
WHEN: Come at 6:30 to help us get boats and gear ready if you’re able. Paddle starts at 7:00! We can provide kayaks and gear for the first 20 RSVPs, but if you’re able to bring your own boat and gear you are welcome to.
WHERE: Please park in the Cathedral Park parking lot (8800 N Bradford St) and walk next door to our location at Green Anchors (map below). We have a few parking spots reserved in our driveway. Please email mosquito@mosquitofleet.us if you need accessible parking!
