The Fleet Welcomes Veterans for Peace Sailboat to Portland
On Sunday, September 15th, the Mosquito Fleet paddled out onto the Willamette River in downtown Portland to welcome The Golden Rule, the Veterans for Peace sailboat, and raise awareness of the connections between militarism and climate change.
As we engage in climate justice work in the Pacific Northwest, be must acknowledge the inherent connection between war and climate change locally and internationally. The climate justice movement can no longer ignore the climate and environmental impacts from the military industrial complex. We know that:
the US Military emits more greenhouse gas emissions than entire countries
the US war on Iraq devastated the country’s environment and its people
the greenhouse gas emissions during the first months of Israel’s ongoing genocide of Palestine were greater than the annual carbon footprint of 20 nations in an entire year
the oil industry encourages and capitalizes on war, for example when the US oil oil lobby pushed fossil fuel extraction in Gaza as a global security solution
environmental destruction, capitalist expansion, and genocide in Sudan are directly related
American companies that have physical locations in our communities - Chevron, Boeing and Intel to name a few - are responsible for supporting the Israeli government and fueling the Palestinian genocide
It is our responsibility to acknowledge these connections in our climate justice work. Climate Justice without intersectionality replicates systemic harms, including and especially in the case of the military industrial complex, colonization and racism. Follow these orgs to get connected to Portland’s anti-war movement!
